GLOCAL OUTSIDERS
(Curated by Jiri David, Vasil Artamonov)Contemporary Czech art and its peak equivalent conducts 'research' in the field of ethics and the social sphere, it seeks a contextual, free platform for critical reflection, it takes risks in the political field, for example when it battles for space with arrogance, blindness, lack of education, etc. The artists seek their formulations in the history, or histories, of art.
They re-evaluate the history of art and make use of symbols with a consciousness of their value, entirely freely, however, under the supervision of the actual memory of art, while respecting all that has so far been expressed, thematized or made, which is a precondition for meaningful reconstruction, citation, rejection, play and the like.
First of all art is made by artists; at the same time during the last decades the figure of the curator was redefined by the art system in a more ‘expanded’ sense. For this reason the two curators of Glocal Outsiders are playing two ‘characters’ for praguebiennale 3: David’s taking part in Expanded Painting 2 while Artamonov collaboration with Alexey Klyuykov could be interpreted in two ways: On one hand it represents Prague’s multiculturalism (they are both Russian-born Prague-based) on the other hand it is an excellent example of the shifting between the role of the artist and role of the curator.
