PRAGUEBIENNALE3 After nearly four months, Prague Biennale 3 is coming to a close. British curators and journalists are on a special visit this week to Prague. A new record of visitors has been set. The Mattoni prize has been awarded to the young painter Daniel Pitin.
Inaugurated May 24th, after nearly four months, Prague Biennale 3 will close its doors this coming Sunday, the 16th of September.
A large, international survey with around 250 artists from all over the world and three special, international stars, Marina Abramovic, Shirin Neshat and Vanessa Beecroft with video works the artist themselves esteemed to be most representative of their respective practices.
The great interest demonstrated by the world in this edition, even richer than the former, is bringing to Prague a group of 14 British curators, driven by the desire to visit the biennale as well as explore contemporary Czech art, which still lacks visibility abroad and is hardly represented by private galleries, museums and international collections. Among others, representatives from Tate Modern and the Hayward gallery in London will come this Thursday.
Prague Biennale 3 in this third edition, confirms itself as the most significant event of Central Europe and more. Its polyphonic formula with a broad spectrum of curators (after the example of the famous Aperto 93, in the Venice Biennale of the same year, conceived and curated by Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi and in which Maurizio Cattelan defined the exhibition that changed the structure of art in those years until today), based on 22 different curatorial projects, with artists coming from 35 different countries and a low budget, brought to Prague more than 40 thousand visitors - a number hitherto unrecorded for an exhibition of contemporary art in the Czech Republic. The visitors, whose average age was around 32, were 35% foreigners and 65% Czechs and Slovaks.
For this edition of the Biennale, our general sponsor Mattoni decided to create a prize for a young Czech artist, "Objev na Prague Biennale 3." The Mattoni prize, awarded by a jury consisting of Mattoni's director of strategic marketing, Gabriele Guzzo, the organizers of Prague Biennale 3, Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi and representatives of Czech artists and curators, Jiri David and Jiri Sefcik, will be officially given to Daniel Pitin the day of the biennale's closing.
Daniel Pitin, whose paintings were presented in the biennale in the section Expanded Painting was selected for his high degree of innovation and maturity as expressed in his work, influenced by cinematographic stills transformed into architecture and urban landscapes.
Prague Biennale will also award an unusual prize to an artist voted on by visitors, whose name will be revealed only after the closing of this edition.

PRAGUEBIENNALE324 May - 16 September 2007 Karlin Hall - Thamova 14 - Prague 8

In the labyrinth of Central Europe, collective memory and the boundaries of painting meet in Prague for the third year running.
Now in its third year, PRAGUEBIENNALE re-launches itself once more. Through a vast display of both recent and past works (from painting and photography to performance and installation art) this year's edition aims to explore and pinpoint the most significant aspects of Central European art. The show displays works by artists young and old, new and affirmed, as well as covering the very movements that shaped the sixties and seventies.
Special exhibitions have been dedicated to Czech minimalism and Slovak actionism, which, hitherto, have not been documented on an international level.
Following upon the success new artists have achieved after participating in 'Expanded Painting' (PRAGUEBIENNALE veritably 'baptised' or, so to speak, 'consecrated' Andro Wekua, Matthias Weischer, Dana Schutz, Tal R, Victor Man and Wilhelm Sasnal), Expanded Painting 2, will present twenty emerging European artists.
There will be a special focus on the 'School of Cluj' in Romania, which, after Leipzig and Dresden, is proving to be a veritable goldmine of contemporary painters.
Moreover, the fair pays homage to three seminal artists: Above all, however, the true stars of PRAGUEBIENNALE3 are indeed the very cultures and minor stories of Central Europe.

PRAGUEBIENNALE3Glocal & Outsiders
The third edition of the most important event of Central European art can be found from the 24th of May until the 16th of September.
PRAGUE BIENNALE, has by now become a much anticipated appointment in the art world in general and particularly in all of Central Europe. It will be on view from May 24th until September 16th 2007. The seat of this event will be in its signature location where it was hosted last year: in the magnificent post-industrial space of Karlin Hall, this year radically transformed thanks to the futuristic modifications of Getulio Alviani. The theme that binds the PRAGUE BIENNALE 3 is Glocal & Outsiders, giving a survey of local cultural positions framed through an international lens.
The central nucleus will be represented by an attentive display of the new artistic realities of the Czech and Slovak Republic (New Scene, New Photography, Minimalism and Conceptual Art in the Czech and Slovak Republic from the Seventies until today, curated by Jiri David, Vasil Artamonov, Juraj Carny, Vladimir Birgus, Martin Dostal), What Went Wrong curated by Andrea Bellini presents three of the hottest Californian artists who will explore the culture and history of Prague. Baltic Mythologies provides emerging artists from the ends of Europe (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and is curated by Laima Kreivyte and Luigi Fassi).
From Kosovo to Kaliningrad translates and extraordinary voyage from throughout Central Europe and Ex-USSR as curated by Aaron Moulton. Marco Scotini's exhibition The Process dissects collective memory and social histories. And to finish, Expanded Painting unites all possibilities of painting and its tangents through the curation of Helena Kontova and Giancarlo Politi as obtained through direct collaboration from qualified tastemakers and artist friends.
These principally definitive projects, in addition to other as yet unannounced sections, cohere to define this event's scope. In the next press release PRAGUE BIENNALE 3's entire galaxy will be exposed complete with the names of nearly fifty invited artists.
